“You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.”
Deuteronomy 11:19-21 ESV
Growing up, I always dreamed of “doing ministry.” I didn’t always know what that phrase would entail, but I knew I was meant for it. I considered living on the mission field, authoring books, and becoming a traveling speaker- all noble callings and possibilities. However, I somehow missed the notion that parenthood is a mission field. Parenthood is the opportunity to disciple and impart God’s Word throughout the day to a small handful of God’s creation. Parenthood allows us to do the work of discipleship, day in and day out for many years. What a beautiful calling and heavy responsibility! Deuteronomy 11 reminds us that this responsibility does not lie solely on educators or pastors. We must talk of the Lord in every location, both in the home and out of the home. We must talk of the Lord in every part of the day, both in the morning and in the evening. While it’s not mutually exclusive with other types of ministry, today I’m thankful for the mission field that is parenthood. I pray that God would use our children to exponentially impact our communities.
